7 Eating Tips to Decrease Your Risk of Developing Multiple Sclerosis

We know that eating a diet that’s high in sugar and processed foods is bad for your health and can lead to serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease, but there are also some foods and chemicals found in processed foods that have been linked to an increased risk of developing leaky gut (intestinal permeability) which can lead to multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases. With tips from prevention.com, we’ve compiled a list of ways to avoid these foods.

Go Easy on Salt and Sugar

Buying whole foods instead of packaged and processed foods means that you can control the amount of salt and sugar you consume. While both are great flavor enhancers, you only need a small sprinkle of either to get the desired effects. Choosing unsalted and unsweetened food will allow you to track how much salt and sugar is in your diet, and allow you to choose healthier options like Himalayan salt instead of table salt, or organic honey instead of cane sugar.

Avoid Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are used in processed foods to give them a creamier texture without using dairy products, so can often be found in non-diary ice cream, salad dressings, and even almond milk. Check the labels of products and avoid items which have the word “gum” after them. Two of the main offenders are lecithin and carrageenan.

Processed Meats

Processed meats such as hot dogs, chicken nuggets, imitation crab and other types of foods where the meat glue “microbial transglutaminase” has been used should be avoided. Stick to whole pieces of meat such as cuts of steak, chicken breasts, fillets of fish etc.

Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, and crackers can mess with blood sugar levels. In addition, nearly all of these products contain gluten which can often cause other health problems. Choose alternative grains such as quinoa, amaranth, and millet.

Avoid Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is a nanoparticle often used in paper and plastic packaging so it pays to decant products into glass jars when you get back from the grocery store. However, these nanoparticles are also used to help keep certain foods looking white, so can often be found in frosting, candies, and gum.

Build Up Resistance to Fermented Foods

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut and lacto-fermented pickles are very good for gut health but you need to build up a resistance to them first as they can cause bloating and gas.

Boost Gut Health

Turn to foods known to boost gut health to avoid developing leaky gut. Think probiotic foods like kefir, kimchi, yogurt and tempeh. Alcohol, on the other hand, is not good for gut health so you should limit the amount you consume.

    Thank you, the jury is still out on nutrition and MS. Most researchers and doctors discount the anecdotal and look at numbers. I think you’ll develop MS regardless; however, strongly believe life choices can alter outcome and course.

      Hi Nick! Thank you for the comment. What you say it not wrong. MS is going to strike, in some people, regardless of what they do. However, the severity, complications and even attitude can be effected by diet. Staying away from processed foods, sugar, salt, etc. will always help your body remain stronger and better apt to handle the complications of MS in a better way than if those foods are a main part of your diet.

    MS existed before the majority of items on the list were invented.

    If a person follows the guidance in this article by what percent is their chances of getting MS reduced?

    I am not saying that any of the suggestions are bad, but where is the scientific evidence that eating lacto-fermented pickles reduces your chances of getting MS?

    There is zero evidence nor any credible scientific theory that MS can be prevented by diet. This rubbish perpetuates the idea that people cause their own disease, and publishing such a title (which was a teaser link to this) casts serious doubt on the credibility of this site.

    My son was on a strict diabetic diet that I obsessed making from scratch out of fresh and unprocessed foods. He also dropped 120 extra pounds he had been carrying. Yet like me his mother he has low sodium and low BP. He takes meds to keep his BP up. I also do not process Vit.D at all. I’m on 100K IU every 5 days. Well my son has the same problem. He got my migraines. But I nor anyone in my family or his fathers have MS. His dad developed type 2diabetis hence the good diet. Today to many grasp at the ribbons of easy and want diet to be a solution. MS is as variable over the four main types as there are people. It seems my son won the genetic lottery and got the crap MS. Beyond diet what it helps you do is feel better.lose a bit of weight and it might make walking just a tiny bit easier. Learning to cook and make blueberry muffins out of but flowers and stevia for sweetener and have your friends rave about your great cooking it boosts your self esteem. Its a matter of the good feelings of accomplishment that give you a high your being proactive. The diet most likely not help the symptoms but the felling good about what you accomplish does.

    My son also found a makers space near us. Its like a local myth busters. Great people that form clubs to learn new thins or if its anima night the watch Japanese animation movies. Tomorrow he is taking a club sponsored class on solder and robotic. Its about getting your self into a place where you are capable of doing things good for your body. Do something for the mental food needs as well

    For those of you that get worn out dealing with insurance, medicaid, medicare, seeing a neurologist and getting treatment. I’ll teach you how to win on that battle field. Dealing with all of that for my son raised my low BP up to normal. That’s when I feel good. Care takers need stimulation too
