Useful Tips for Managing Cognitive Health With Multiple Sclerosis

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, around 65 percent of people living with the disease suffer from some cognitive issues — most notably, memory, concentration and speed of processing information.

If you find that you are frequently experiencing cognitive issues and that it’s affecting your daily life, you need to speak to your health care team. They’ll assess your problems and provide you with strategies to help you better deal with the situation.

The brain is a complex organ, but the more you use it, the more you protect it from the damage that comes with aging and neuromuscular illnesses. Engaging in activities that use your brain by encouraging thinking, concentration and creativity can help to ward off some of the cognitive effects of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Cognitive health can be improved by participating in activities such as painting or drawing, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and sudokus, learning a new language, creative writing, watching game shows, and playing card and board games, which are all enjoyable ways of passing the time while keeping your mind active.

Exercising your mind doesn’t have to be a solo affair, engaging with others in discussions, joining a book club, becoming an MS advocate or taking part in faith fellowship meetings are all excellent ways to improve cognitive health while enjoying the company of others.

    “Taking part in faith fellowship meetings”?

    Does that involve sitting in a group and screaming: “God, can you please explain to me why my losing my mind to MS is in your grand plan?”

    Iaino – I have heard my Mother make reference to that so many times, for various situations throughout her life. I am being tested for MS. I don’t know if I have it or not but between knowing I will break down and cry if I do – to having already decided what I will and will not do with the rest of my life; I have had some pretty weird dreams. I have decided that I will stay mentally active by reading, writing, studying and being more social than I have lately. I will go to the gym and exercise as long as I am able – I have always been a doer, the fixer, and the caretaker. I am pretty sure I am just who I am and that, perhaps by pushing myself to do what I am able- somehow through it all I will still be able and capable to hopefully greater extents; than I would if I hadn’t worked at remaining active and engaged. I am not mad that I may have MS. I am sad. But I don’t blame, and only God knows why. I have faced and walked through the uncertain, unknowing, found my self so powerless and not in control; unable to fix- help those I love so dearly. In the end surrendering and giving it to God. Which is what I have to do now; and what I will need to continue to do whether they come back and tell me; that I either have MS or not. Regardless, my life changes. I am with you in spirit. I won’t know until Friday. God Speed.
