The commercial testing services LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics are beginning to process coronavirus / COVID-19 tests in the U.S. Note, however, that these labs WILL NOT ACTUALLY TEST PEOPLE. People will be tested in a healthcare facility, or by their own physician, and the health care professional will submit the specimen to the lab to perform the actual test.

Here’s what a news release from LabCorp says:

“LabCorp does not currently collect specimens for the test. Patients for whom testing has been ordered should not be sent to a LabCorp location to have a specimen collected. Instead, an appropriate specimen should be collected at the healthcare facility where the patient was seen and the test was ordered. The specimen should be sent to LabCorp using standard procedures. Test results will be available in 3-4 days.”

A news release from Quest Diagnostics says much the same thing.

    PAYING FOR THE TEST

The full cost of a coronavirus / COVID-19 test is covered by both Medicare and Medicaid. Private insurance generally follows Medicare’s lead on what’s covered.
