Pheno Therapetics has been given more than £5 million of funding to develop new medication to help treat multiple sclerosis (MS). It aims to build on the work of University of Edinburgh professors Siddharthan Chandran and Neil Carragher. They are specifically trying to identify new molecules to kick-start the body to repair the myelin sheath.

The researchers have the funding secured for three years during which time they plan to bring both new and repurposed drugs to clinical trials, and develop drugs which will treat people with later-stage MS. They say that developing a remyelination process could potentially slow or halt the progressive disability MS patients face.

Do you think remyelination is the holy grail of MS research?
