Getting a multiple sclerosis diagnosis is never easy, especially when your life revolves around sports, mainly because MS is a progressive, debilitating, immune-mediated neurodegenerative disorder.

What exactly is multiple sclerosis?

And that’s what happened with Miguel Rocha, a 33-year-old Portuguese man who was recently diagnosed with MS. Miguel is a bodysurfer (bodysurfing is very similar to surfing, but instead of using a board to surf the waves, the athletes use their own body), who won a national bodysurf championship after he got his MS diagnosis.

I knew nothing about multiple sclerosis. When I got the news, the world fell on my feet. My first thought was that, in about two or three years, I would be in a wheelchair. My friends and my healthcare team were the ones who told me that it’s not necessarily like that and that I can have a normal life,” Miguel shared in an interview with a Portuguese TV news station. That’s why he decided to join the second national bodysurf championship and win the competition. Now, he’s training for the European championship and could become a professional bodysurfer.

Watch Miguel’s inspirational story here. Unfortunately, the video is in Portuguese and has no subtitles available, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel inspired.
