I recently wrote a column about my experience with trying to eat healthier and improve my day-to-day experience with multiple sclerosis.

My goal isn’t to follow any specific diet, but to find out what works best for me and stick to that. What works best for me isn’t necessarily what I’m accustomed to, or what I happen to like best. This is a diet, but it’s also a complete lifestyle change.

Right on the heels of my column, some interesting findings and studies were published on Multiple Sclerosis News Today that seem to reinforce this idea.

I know I’m not the only one who has had to find what works best for their particular symptoms and life with this disease.

What has been your experience with dieting with MS? Have you consulted with your healthcare team about finding a regimen that works for you?

A quick update on the diet. I don’t have any allergies, but I am much less tolerant of lactose than I once was. This means I’m having to lay off of dairy products and I think it’s because of how slow MS has made my digestive process. What I mean is that, if a glass of milk passed through my digestive system as quickly as it once did, I wouldn’t have a problem. Unfortunately now that isn’t the case. I’ve also discovered that anything carbonated bloats me up, maybe for the same reason. I’ve discovered that there is a big difference between fermentable and fermented. I can tolerate sauerkraut, but raw cabbage will make me bloated and gassy. Finally, things I once enjoyed with the knowledge that I might have to run to the bathroom after can no longer be enjoyed because my ability to run to the bathroom is severely affected. For example I really like curry, but always knew that it was going to affect my digestion. In the past that was just a known risk, but in the present, that’s a risk that can’t be easily handled, so I’m having to avoid it.

On the whole, The diet is going well and I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and Feel better so I’m happy with it.
