Sanctura (trospium chloride) for Bladder dysfunction in Multiple Sclerosis

FDA approved Sanctura (trospium chloride) is used to treat bladder disturbances, which are common in people with MS.

SancturaĀ for people with MS and overactive bladder, an uncontrollable muscle contraction thatĀ leads to symptoms including urinary incontinence, feelings of urination urgency, and frequency of urination acts asĀ an antispasmodic/antimuscarinic drug. Antimuscarinic drugs reduce involuntary contractions of bladder muscles and increases bladder capacity. The drugĀ works by relaxing the bladder muscles and preventing or reducing uninhibited contractions of the bladder muscle. It slows theĀ desire, frequency, and urgency to empty the bladder.

Sanctura comes in two formats: immediate release tablets that are taken in 20 mg doses orally twice a day with water on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before meals); and extended release tablets that are taken in a 60 mg dose once daily in the morning with water on an empty stomach (at least one hour before meals).

Some side effectsĀ include dry mouth or throat, headache, mild constipation, upset stomach, gas, dizziness, drowsiness, or dry eyes.

ThereĀ are no SancturaĀ generics available.
