Hiprex (Methenamine) for UTI Prevention in Multiple Sclerosis

Hiprex (methenamine) is prescribedĀ for urinary tract infection prevention. Known asĀ a “urinary antiseptic,” the drug’sĀ antibacterial activity is due to the conversion of methenamine to formaldehyde in the presence of acidic urine. In order to bolster the effectiveness of methenamine, sometimes it is necessary to add supplements to acidify the urine such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid).Ā 

The drug is prescribed on a long-term basis for people with chronic urinary tract infections UTIs). BecauseĀ UTIs are common among people with multiple sclerosis,Ā Hiprex is often prescribed in patients with bladder dysfunction.

It is usually taken 1g by mouth twice a day. Alkalinizing foods or medications should be restricted.Ā Common side effects includeĀ nausea or upset stomach.

There are generic versions of Hiprex available, and is also sold under the brand names Mandelamine and Urex .
