Mineral oil is a lubricant laxative for occasional constipation and bowel irregularity.Ā It can be helpful in treating constipation in people with multiple sclerosis.
Mineral oil is taken by mouth. It works by slowing the absorption of water and coating the bowel and the stool with a waterproof film.
As with other laxatives, mineral oil should not be used too frequently or for long periods of time. It could buildĀ up in body tissues and may interfere with the body’s absorption of important nutrients and vitamins A, D, E, and K.
It is to be taken orally, 15 to 45 mL once daily at bedtime.
Some the side effects fromĀ mineral oil are bloating, gas, mild diarrhea, or stomach cramps.
Constipation is the most common symptom of bowel dysfunction in people with MS. The disease can interrupt brain communications that signal time for a bowel movement. Managing constipation should include a high-fiber diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, and cereals. High-fluid intake should include six to eight glasses of water daily. Maintaining an active life-styleĀ and establishing a bowel schedule is important. There is a range of laxatives that are used, most of them are sold over-the-counter.
