Philips Unveils In-Progress Radiology Portal for Diagnosing, Treating Neurological Diseases

philipslogoRoyal Philips recently announced the introduction of the IntelliSpace Portal 9.0, the latest edition of its advanced comprehensive visual analysis and quantification platform for neurological disorders.

The platform was presented at the 2016 Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting (RSNA), taking place through Dec. 2 in Chicago.

Currently a work in progress, IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 features several multi-modality functions and expanded neurological tools designed to help radiologists and physicians detect, diagnose and follow the treatment of diseases. The device addresses a need in radiology for better tools to support growing numbers of patients with brain injuries and neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dementia, and stroke.

“Radiology has a unique ability to influence and improve outcomes, and intelligent tools enable us to empower radiologists with the right information,” said Yair Briman, senior vice president and general manager of Healthcare IT for Philips. “With advances in machine learning, IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 will now be able to … enhance the important daily functions of a radiologist such as pre-preprocessing of images, encouraging faster and more streamlined diagnosis.”

New and updated capabilities of IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 include:

• Enhanced Computed tomography (CT) Brain Perfusion imaging — a noninvasive technique often used in diagnosis of stroke to provide information on the delivery of blood or blood flow to the brain. CT Brain Perfusion shows which areas of the brain are being supplied or perfused adequately with blood and which are not.

• MR Perfusion imaging, which, according to an American Journal of Roentgenology review, refers to “several recently developed techniques used to non-invasively measure cerebral perfusion via assessment of various hemodynamic measurements such as cerebral blood volume, cerebral blood flow, and mean transit time.”
• Support for Longitudinal Brain Imaging (LoBI), an application that has been optimized to interpret brain MRI scans and to facilitate the evaluation of neurological disorders over time so clinicians can monitor disease progression.

• CT Spectral Applications — Philips’ IntelliSpace Portal Spectral Diagnostic suite of clinical applications has been optimized for viewing and analyzing spectral data sets from the company’s IQon Spectral CT scanner. Clinicians can access the application they need when and where they need it, to gain a comprehensive, personalized overview of each patient.

cortechslogoAnother IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 feature is the NeuroQuant measurement application (CorTech Labs), which enables clinicians to quantify brain volume loss. NeuroQuant can make quantitative MRI measurement a routine part of clinical practice.

NeuroQuant automatically segments and measures brain structure volumes compared to normal benchmarks, so as to reduce subjectivity in a diagnostic process.

wolanskyl“As the rates of dementia and neurodegeneration rise, neuroradiologists need advanced tools to help referring physicians treat these challenging cases,” said Leo Wolansky, acting chief of Neuroradiology at University Hospital’s Cleveland Medical Center, in a press release. “IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 offers a comprehensive set of robust tools so neuroradiologists can quantify disease expediently.”

IntelliSpace Portal 9.0, with its more than 70 applications and enhancements to many of the core applications, provides a single platform for visual analysis and quantification that spans clinical domains in radiology, including neurology, cardiology and oncology. Clinicians can print 3-D models with high detail and resolution, and the portal also incorporates enhancements to an array of core applications that range from MR Cardiac Analysis to CT TAVI planning.

IntelliSpace Portal 9.0 includes multimodality clinical applications that can be accessed from any point in the hospital network, and can also integrate with hospital information and other systems to allow information to be shared broadly. The portal’s scalability allows neurologists to access an analysis from virtually anywhere across the organization, while keeping consistent applications and user preferences.
