Treating MS with Holistic Behaviors and Strategies: A Nutritionist’s View

When I first met Stephanie in March, she was like any healthy 28-year-old coming in to see me for a nutrition consult. Her positive attitude and bright smile filled the room as she told me about her job as a grade school teacher and the new apartment she just moved into with her boyfriend of seven years.

“We are a great team,” she said. “Little did he know that his law school wouldn’t be the biggest challenge we’d face as a couple.”

Stephanie was diagnosed about a year ago with multiple sclerosis (MS), and behind her beautiful eyes and strong spirit, I could sense her pain at the discovery of the most recent spinal cord lesions after she complained to her doctors of new nerve pain in her feet. She will be starting steroid infusions in a few weeks, and together we hope to design a nutrition and lifestyle plan that will support her health and healing, and preserve her quality of life.

Nerve pain is hard to grasp and relentless in its unpredictability. The nerve damage associated with MS has been linked to causative factors including dysbiosis of the gut microbe, autoimmune responses, and increased inflammation, all leading to an attack on the nervous system by the body’s own immune cells.

In “The Gut Microbiome in Multiple Sclerosis,” an opinion piece published in Current Treatment Options in Neurology in April 2015, two Dartmouth researchers state: “The gut microbiome has been shown to have profound effects on the development and maintenance of immune system in both animal models and in humans. A growing body of evidence has implicated the human gut microbiome in a range of disorders, including obesity, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Animal studies present compelling evidence that the gut microbiome plays a significant role in the progression of demyelinating disease, and that modulation of the microbiome can lead to either exacerbation or amelioration of symptoms.

A holistic relationship links the nervous system with the brain and the gut microbiome. The microbiome is a delicate ecosystem of microbes that live in and on the human body, and each person has a unique one. Understanding its subtlety is key in adopting and adapting techniques for health and healing. 

This philosophy has strong roots in the Eastern wellness and longevity sciences of Ayurveda (the traditional Hindu system of medicine) and Chinese medicine. Within these systems, nutrition takes on a different meaning when discussing how digestion and assimilation refer to nutrients. They imply and reinforce the importance of discerning what environmental influences we allow into our bodies through the senses, and the capacity with which they program the cells. It is important to recognize and respect the connectivity and influence nature has on the mind, body, and spirit.

The food we put into the body is a powerful antecedent for physical and emotional well-being, and diets high in sugar, alcohol, and gluten are triggers that disturb the delicate balance of the microbiome, compromising immunity, cognitive functioning, and cellular integrity.

Among studies into the relationship between diet and MS is the “Australian Multi-centre Study of Environment and Immune Function,” or the Ausimmune Study. This multicenter case-control study investigates the role of environmental factors in the development of first demyelinating events — a precursor to MS. Questionnaires detailing the quality and quantity of foods were analyzed, and the findings concluded people eat in two main patterns. The first is a Mediterranean Style diet,” which is healthy and high in fish, eggs, chicken, turkey, legumes, and vegetables. The second is a “Standard American Diet (SAD),” high in full-fat dairy foods and red meat. These findings were supported by the North American Research Committee on MS (NARCOMS), where a survey suggests healthier diet and lifestyle choices lessen the burden and severity of MS symptoms and potential progression, lending support to the impact food has on our overall functioning.

Exploring specific macronutrient and micronutrient breakdown further, fats and antioxidants, specifically, are essential nutrients to consider. Fats protect and are the building blocks of myelin sheaths, and antioxidants help diffuse oxidative damage, the unstable chemical metabolites of oxygen metabolism caused by poor diet and environmental factors.

Prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics (live bacteria and certain yeasts) support gut integrity — the balance of good and bad bacteria in the intestines that is necessary for microbial harmony. Certain microbes like Candida (a yeast species linked to fungal infections), which are harmless in normal amounts, have been shown to trigger an inflammatory immune response that may contribute to the breakdown of the myelin sheath during periods of Candida fungal overgrowth in the body. Anti-microbial nutrition interventions, such as garlic, aloe vera, fermented foods like kombucha, coconut oil, and curcumin (turmeric), have been shown to keep overgrowth at bay.

So, how can we utilize food and lifestyle as medicine when it comes to managing MS?

Working with Stephanie, I designed a basic outline of important nutrients and guidelines, and the space for her to get creative with her choices:

  1. Consume unprocessed foods as often as possible.
  2. Include medium-chain fatty acids in cooking or in smoothies for the brain and nervous system as they support energy, metabolism, and cognitive health. Examples are coconut oil and palm oil.
  3. Eat the rainbowFruits and vegetables that range in color contain phytonutrients, such as organic sulfur compounds, polyphenols, and carotenoids. Together these foods help rid the body of toxic chemicals and infuse essential nutrition to reduce inflammation and preserve cell integrity. The best sources of organic sulfur compounds are cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, dark leafy greens, kohlrabi, horseradish, cabbage, kale, radishes, mustard greens, cauliflower, and watercress.
  4. Polyphenols are naturally occurring chemicals found in plant foods that function as powerful antioxidants. Examples are flavonoids, phenolic acid, stilbenes, and lignans, and are found in tea, legumes, berries, dark chocolate, soy, and red wine. Note to reader: Food-based sources are less risky than supplements, but consideration should always be given to medications being used. Iron status should be looked into as well, as absorption may be compromised when including these micronutrients into the diet.

  5. Red and orange foods contain carotenoids and the powerful, but often under-appreciated, nutrient lycopene. Lycopene is found in cell membranes and is an important line of defense when the cell is under assault from exogenous or endogenous toxins. The best sources are found in tomatoes, red carrots, watermelon, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, and winter squash. It is best to eat these foods cooked, and with a fat like olive oil, because the bioavailability of lycopene is increased through cooking and the nutrient is fat-soluble, meaning it requires fat to be absorbed.
  6. Omega-3 fatty acids come from DHA/EPA marine sources, such as wild salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, marine algae, and fish oil supplements. Plant-based ALA sources such as chia, hemp, and krill oil are essential but have a low conversion rate to EPA and DHA. About 650 mg/day fulfills the nutritional requirement.
  7. Probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are “good” bacteria strands found in fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, kombucha, miso, and kimchi. Prebiotics are fiber-rich raw foods, such as dandelion greens, raw garlic, leeks, legumes, banana, asparagus, jicama, artichokes, and sunchokes. These prebiotic foods serve as an energy source for probiotics and are required to ensure they are able to exert their influence.
  8.  High-fiber foods from ancient and whole grains include millet, teff, sorghum, buckwheat, and amaranth. They are packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals that impact immunity and enzyme function, and help control blood sugar levels. These grains can be used for breads, crusts, granola, and even added to smoothies for texture.
  9.  Think choline. Sources found in egg yolks, sunflower seeds, and soybeans are essential precursors to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter found throughout the nervous system and required for brain and muscle function.
  10. Vitamin D and magnesium. 1,000 IU daily of vitamin D is essential for immunity, and magnesium from leafy greens, fatty fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, and bananas enhances its absorption.

A study published in the Iranian Journal of Neurology in 2014 indicated that women who take 400 IU daily of vitamin D, the dose typically found in daily multivitamin supplements, are 40 percent less likely to develop MS compared with those who are not. Research has also shown immune disorders are more common in areas with fewer hours of sunlight. For example, MS is more common in Canada and the northern U.S. than in its southern states. 

It is important to remember to look at the human as a whole being; it is hard to deconstruct and treat symptoms only. The holistic philosophy places equal emphasis on creating and cultivating a foundation of health utilizing mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional therapeutic supports. We are what we eat, but also what we breathe, see, touch, hear, smell, and spend our energy doing. Investing in self-care methods, such as meditation, acupuncture, cupping, breathwork, psychotherapy, massage, and other stress-reduction approaches are essential nutrition for healing and remain priceless allies on the journey.

    I woke up Blind in September 2012, and was diagnosed with MS. It was as though my taste buds had changed afterwards. Everything still TASTES the same, yet I RARELY actually get and/or FEEL hungry. For the last 3 years, I’ve fasted all day, eating 1 meal a day, which is dinner around 6 or 7pm. I eat “SALADS” every single day. Spinach, Arugula, white meat chicken, cheese, apples, oranges, pineapple, pomegranates, lots & lots of MIXED NUTS, all topped with vinaigrette dressings. I basically throw everything but the kitchen SINK into my salads! LOL! I’ve had over 70 straight monthly infusions of Tysabri as well. As of TODAY, December 2018, I’ve experienced NO RELAPSES! Sure, I have a bit of numbness or tingling every now and then, but no MAJOR symptoms such as losing my vision again, or becoming disabled. I also eat approximately 2-3 tablespoons of real, unprocessed “HONEY” each day, along with a teaspoon or two of “CINNAMON”. Call it strange if you will, but I began all of these things 3 to 4 years ago. Long before reading articles published here lately concerning the value of “FASTING” and the medicinal purposes of spices such as cinnamon. I know for a FACT that I was and am being led by the Lord. Ultimately, it is he who has kept me well, and hopefully he will continue to do so. I’m CONVINCED that our “GUT MICROBIOME” is the KEY to keeping MS at Bay, PERSONALLY that is….

      My story is simmilar to yours but when my doc took me off of tysabri I decided to not go on another drug but just stay the course w my keto and fasting regeme. I finally did relapse after 2 yrs who knows why- so many confounding variables…I do totally trust that Christ is in all of this!

    Out of all this I’ve read, the beast thing I read is that you’re a believer in Christ Jesus. I also have MS and eating is a HUGE factor in getting yourself well of MS. I just started eating the right things and I know that I will be well also. Thank you for writing this as all MS people need to read positive stories as yours.

    I don’t have ms I have a muscle disease in my legs calle hereditary spastic paraplegia .it reallysucks its hard to lift my legs and my balance is horrible

  4. My name is Mary Sherowski; my husband, Ed Sherowski, has Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis which afflicts Ed with chronic painful numbness in his legs, hips, spine, back. Then there are swallowing difficulties, compromised walking and body balance, tough bladder and bowel functions, tired-weariness problems, not to mention frustration and sadness with PPMS and its symptoms. Ed was diagnosed about eleven years ago, directed to take pain medications, and not given much hope for arresting and/or stopping the symptoms.
    However, I read a study very similar to this one which encouraged vegan eating, eliminating dairy and meat, excepting occasional fish once monthly, limiting or eliminating refined sugar, encouraging fruit/vegetable smoothies using flaxseed,chia seeds,beet powders, super greens, coconut oil/palm oil, almond/
    cashew/soy/macadamia milks, chaga tea—by itself or mixed in,
    lots of spring water. Ed occasionally has organic red wine, drinks as much water as possible, drinks fresh juice often with vegetable greens, eats fresh vegetables and fruits much along with vegan milk ice creams, stevia sweetened dark chocolate. He does all the cooking—having been a chef—and cooks excellent vegan dishes. We both use honey, which is technically not vegan.
    He rests more, has retired and is able to walk our dogs in warm weather, does more physical stuff than he probably should, has a wonderful relationship with Jesus and daily watches Christian television programs, attends church, is personal friends with the best pastor ever, exercises moderately, and does choice supplements including freeze dried nettles, lycopene, circummun,
    whole foods vitamin D,B-12 liquid, milk thistle, flaxseed, biotin, iron, vitamin E oil, cinnamon, lypoic acid, cranberry, apple cider vinegar, co-enzyme 10, selenium, sour cherry juice. I am surely forgetting something. Chaga tea is said to be helpful in healing MS. Ed also consume medical marijuana edibles and oils. He’s not really gotten into massage therapy or acupuncture yet, which will stop some of his leg swelling edema.
    Massaging his legs with HEMP/cbd salve seems to help his feet and legs sensation and relieve swelling and pain.
    Ed is holistically healing himself, arresting symptoms, but still taking Tramadol and Gabapentin for pain. Hopefully some of the medical marijuana cbd oils will positively discourage Ed’s pain levels in his legs, spine, back, hips. We are moving his mother’s brand new hospital bed to make Ed’s sleeping more pleasant and comfortable for his back, rather than a huge recliner. May this information be shared as it is working for Ed and is aligned to what your report is professing. Prayer, fervent prayer, is most helpful, too. Praise God for wisdom and knowledge that is clearly improving Ed’s quality of life and ability to endure PPMS.

      have had relapsing/remitting for abouut 20 years.. i have periods where i can do most things..and then..bang..a horrible day shows up justas i had plannned lunch oute with firends.. or other socail,

      i try to eat all of the above.i know it helps…i am on Rebif.[it sure is $$!].resting sufficiently plays a key role too, as does stress reducers..whatever that may be for you [music, yoga ,reading.spending time with a friend]………thanks for sharing……………karen

    Thank you so much for this article!! I was diagnosed with Ms in 2016 and have been battling with which foods and supplements would be added to my team for this battle and journey. The things you have listed I have implemented in my diet. I feel very encouraged to know I’m on the right track. Now can exhale in knowing that through the right diet, exercise, positive attitude, and belief in God I’m going to be fine.

    I would advise doing more research before posting any dietary advice when it comes to Ms. There has been lots of studies showing the relationship between saturated fat consumption and disease progression. Recommending anyone with ms to consume coconut oil is very risky, with up to 14 grams of saturated fat per serving. I recommend reading dr.. Jelinek’s book ‘overcoming multiple sclerosis.’ He has put endless hours of research into healing and staying healthy with ms and is nearly 20 years relapse free. I also reccomend reading about dr. Swanks 35 year study.

    When I read the comments at articles like this, it reminds me to be thankful for what I do have, and my health, such as it is. Suffering from a disease like MS must be a hellish experience, and the allopathic doctors just make it worse in most cases. While reading the comments, I didn’t see anybody mention black seed oil, from cumin, which has proven to be very helpful for MS patients – I won’t post a link, because you’ll get many good links after entering “black seed oil multiple sclerosis” into a search engine. Praying is also very helpful – the most powerful Force in this world……!

    This article does not mention that its important to be on a DMT as well as address diet. Diet alone will not prevent MS progression.There is no evidence that it has a direct impact on the disease. I do believe diet plays an important role in resilience but its a dangerous game to believe that you can stop MS by diet alone. There is better evidence for exercise but it alone does not stop the disease either. Lifestyle helps quality of life, avoids comorbidities and builds resilience but is no cure.

      I was diagnosed 25 or 30 years ago I’m a 68 year old Male took copaxone for about 10 years still having 3 or 4 exacerbations a year. Presently takeing LD Naltrexone have less than 1 flareup a year. Been going to the gym for over 30 years presently spend 1 hr. daily cardio, 1 hr weight training 5 and 6 days a week. MS has been an inconvenience then I got cancer. More than an inconvenience.

        Thats great news. That your able to continue all of that. I was diagnosed with MS July of 2019. It’s very scary because I was always in the gym running a mile a day, now it’s hard to walk a block. Any idea how to strengthen my knees. Cyst on the spine which could also be causing these pains.
