Might Chocolate Ease Multiple Sclerosis Fatigue?

A research team from Oxford Brookes University is being given a £70,000 ($107,000) grant to analyze whether dark chocolate can help ease symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). The Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS Society) will fund the study.

The goal of the project, according to a press release, is to investigate if a compound found in chocolate — flavonoids — can contribute to easing fatigue in MS patients, one of the most common symptoms reported by people with the condition.

“Dark chocolate is generally seen as a food that’s bad for you but it has good things in it – including flavonoids,” said Dr. Shelly Coe, from Oxford Brookes, the study’s lead researcher. “We have run the idea of this trial past a lot of people, such as those at MS support groups and medics, and they have really liked it. We will be looking at the impact of cocoa flavonoids on inflammation and the role that plays in fatigue. There is no cure for fatigue in people with MS, although the majority of those with the condition experience this symptom at some point.”

The research team will test hot chocolate rich in flavonoids during the trial. Flavonoids are a type of compound found in several plant-based foods, such as dark chocolate that has over 70 percent cocoa levels. Investigators believe flavonoids can help diminish both inflammation and the harm caused by molecules that may be connected to fatigue. In total, 40 people with relapsing MS will drink a daily dose of hot chocolate during six weeks. Half of the participants will receive a flavonoid-rich cocoa drink, while the other half will be given a normal cocoa drink with lower doses of flavonoids. Researchers will check for inflammation through questionnaires asking participants about their fatigue levels and through blood samples. Patients will also be asked to wear accelerometers, or watches that monitor their daily activity.

Dr. Emma Gray, Head of Clinical Trials at the MS Society, stated, “We are really excited to fund this innovative work. More than 100,000 people are living with MS in the U.K. and many of them have to deal with the debilitating effects of fatigue on a daily basis. We are delighted to be supporting this project as it is quirky and unusual, but ultimately based on robust scientific evidence. At the MS Society we want to explore creative ways of helping people with MS cope with their condition and we look forward to seeing the study progress.”

    Mg in chocolate may help 350 chemical reactions. Lyme/antibiotics/Celiac may hurt the gut lining and lower Mg. A hair test shows good minerals/heavy metals. Mg may be low on their hair test and many other minerals due to gluten hurting their intestines so nutrients don’t absorb.

    Some chocolate drinks have gluten in them and chocolate bars may have 20ppm of gluten in them. Very pure chocolate may help instead.

    I need no gluten/dairy/soy/sugar/GMO…vitamins/good oils/minerals…probiotic..LDN…detoxing for my MS.

    Mg may help K get into cells so a person maybe less dehydrated. MS people may need Amour thyroid due to gluten making antibodies to the thyroid.

    Hidden gluten may hurt..LDN helps the immune system work right and helps heal the gut lining/helps the liver/adrenals/vision as it blocks hidden gluten. LDN may help 99% of MS people.

    The UK is high Celiac area…low sunlight due to being far from the equator may make Celiac start which may hurt the gut lining so Mg and other nutrients don’t absorb well. Tests may not work to diagnose Celiac. Cyrex labs is new and may help more regular blood tests or biospies.

    What I do for my Celiac which helps me absorb nutrients/helps my immune system/Lyme/brain/body. (short form):

    No gluten/dairy/soy/sugar/GMO and vitamins/good oils, LDN and detoxing help me. Vit D3 5000IU, zinc 50mg if detoxing, fish oil 2000mg, 20000mg of evening primrose oil. 2000 mg of lecithin, Phosphatidylserine/DMAE, krill oil, CLA, Coenzyme Q10, Rhodiola, Mg citrate 400mg, Vit C, 5000mcg of biotin, Nature’s Plus- Source of life multiple, HCl and enzymes with meals, dairy free probiotic, Vit B12 methylcobalamin shot/spray/under the tongue kind/intrinsic factor kind, MTHF folate, coenyzme Q10, rhodiola, may help brain/body/thyroid/depression/immune system and more. Gluten is wheat/barley/rye..oats may act like gluten with avenin. GMO corn/soy/canola oil may hurt. Amour thyroid maybe needed since gluten may made antibodies to the thyroid.     Sunlight (helps the immune system and helps to heal the gut lining),exercise, organic food, good water..not tap water, cooking by scratch pure food….. no food in a box/bag/premade/label/restaurant which may help avoid hidden gluten. Certified gluten free food may have 20ppm of gluten…too much. Nuts not sold in the shell/meat basting/some spices may have hidden gluten and lotion/make up etc. One restaurant cooks special for me…rice/veg/tea/extra mushrooms (no meat since the woks may have MSG/gluten in them).

    EDTA/DMPS IV chelations from an Alternative doctor, 600mg of cilantro, organic sulfur, Now brand- Detox support, Far Infrared Sauna and more may help detox. Hair tests show good minerals and heavy metals. Heavy metals can block thyroid and other chemical reactions in the body/brain.

    LDN may help block hidden gluten/heal the gut lining and help the immune system, but the Celiac diet is still needed. 100% no gluten..no hidden or microscopic gluten may help. Cutting back on gluten or cheating by eating gluten hurts the immune system. It may take 1 1/2 months to heal the gut lining after getting hidden gluten.

    Amour thyroid has some T3 and Calcitonin. Synthroid is only T4..may not convert to T3. Zn/Se/enough iron/strong probiotic may help convert T4 to T3 for thyroid.

    Alternative doctors/chiropractors/acupuncturists and more may help with health/vitamins etc.

    But if it would help me sleep!…I’m up for pretty much anything!

    This is not the first time I have heard of the help of “chocolate” for MS. I think this is a wonderful test and if you need me, I am willing to participate in the test.

      Chocolate helps my mom get potassium into her cells, but a person needs coenyzmated B vitamins to get Mg to work. Coconut oil in chocolate bars etc clog my blood vessels. Even gluten free chocolate chips hurt me. You can buy chocolate powder at a health food store as a supplement..nothing added. I have MS, but need to be very careful what I eat. I was addicted to coconut/chocolate for awhile, but now with my supplements I am ok. There are other places I can get flavonoids etc.

      MJ may help heal the gut lining which gluten/GMO/antibiotic/Lyme may hurt. 100%no gluten/hidden gluten and LDN which helps block hidden gluten or eating no grains…Paleo style may help.
