Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) for UTIs in Multiple Sclerosis

Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Macrodantin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Macrodantin is a broad spectrum acidic antibiotic and usually kills bacteria in therapeutic concentrations (this refers to the dosage, blood plasma, or serum concentration usually expected to achieve a desired therapeutic effect). These concentrations are found in the urine.

Macrodantin is reduced by bacterial proteins to reactive intermediates, which in turn deactivate or alter bacterial proteins. This leads to the inhibition of vital biochemical processes of the bacteria.

This medication comes as a capsule or a liquid, usually in 50 to 100 mg two or four times a day for at least seven days or after the urine is sterile. It should be taken with a full glass of water with food and at the same time every day.

Common side effects of nitrofurantoin may include headache, dizziness, gas, upset stomach, mild diarrhea, vaginal itching or discharge.

There are generic versions of nitrofurantoin approved by the FDA in addition to the brand name Macrodantin.
