Platform for MS care was finalist for Innovation by Design Awards
Octave Bioscience's Precision Care Solution recognized by Fast Company
Octave Bioscience was selected as a finalist in this year’s Innovation by Design Awards in recognition of the platform it created to improve the care of people with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Organized by the media brand Fast Company, the awards are touted as some of the most sought-after in the design industry. They honor people who challenge themselves to solve some of today’s most pressing issues and advance their fields of expertise.
In the 12th year of the competition, Octave was recognized in the health category. Its Precision Care Solution platform, created in collaboration with DesignMap, combines clinical, imaging, and biological data to create an integrated and accurate view of MS in people living with the condition.
“We believe that better measurable data leads to better management, and that our Octave Precision Care Solution begins to address the significant unmet needs of this community,” Melinda Thomas, chief operating officer and co-founder of Octave, said in a press release.
The platform aims to respond to the challenges of both MS patients, who have symptoms that might be difficult to detect, and neurologists, who often are unable to provide the best possible care due to limited tools, data, and time.
“We know that MS is an extremely heterogeneous disease, with no two patients or care paths alike, and we were able to acknowledge this through our human and tech intersecting … ,” Thomas said.
The Octave Precision Care Solution is the first to include a set of measurements, from multivariate blood tests to optimized MRI scans and analysis, that accurately and objectively measure disease activity, progression, and severity.
Connecting MS patients with specialists
By combining these measurements with its intelligence platform, the solution provides a clinical care program that tracks and connects patients with MS nurse specialists in real time, which allows for a better management of complex and high-cost neurodegenerative diseases like MS.
The platform provides “… value between office visits as well as feeding into a singular, holistic report that gives physicians an unprecedented amount of objective data and partners with People Living with MS to better manage their disease,” Thomas added.
The Innovation by Design Awards distinguishes designers and companies solving the most prevailing problems of the present, and predicting the most critical problems to come.
Applications to the awards are evaluated based on crucial parameters of innovation, including functionality, originality, sustainability, beauty, user view, and cultural and business impacts. The jury includes eminent designers from several fields, business leaders of some of the world’s most innovative companies, as well as Fast Company writers and editors.

Besides Octave, the 2023 honorees include almost 500 projects, services, and products.
